Day 27 - Baddeck, NS

Today we took an all day bus trip along the Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island.

We began the trip departing Baddeck and traveling NW in a clockwise direction toward Chéticamp and Pleasant Bay.

We drove through the highlands which were dotted with farms, woods and small lakes.

Our first stop on the west coast was Joe's Scarecrows.

He had over 100 scarecrows dressed up and arranged in numerous costumes.

Wait, the second scarecrow from the left looks familiar... hey it's Kelvin; he just got caught up in the moment.

Our next stop was at a gift shop called Flora's.

They sell many hooked items created by Flora, shown here at work.

A close up of her working.

The next stop was in Chéticamp, NS.

The pipe organ in the 2nd floor loft.

We passed many rivers on our way to French Mountain.

An outcropping of granite left over from the ice age.

View looking back toward Chéticamp.

We stopped at a viewpoint over looking Pleasant Bay.

We stopped at the Rusty Anchor Restaurant for lunch.  Yes, that is a rusty anchor in front of the statue.

Our group inside the restaurant during lunch.

The Gulf of St Laurence coastline just outside the restaurant.

After leaving Pleasant Bay, we drove inland over the highlands to the Atlantic side of Cape Breton.  These small buildings are emergency shelters along the road for use by those who may be stranded in Winter. Each building has a wood stove and some basic provisions.

A Lone Shieling, replica of a Scottich sheep herders hut as found in Scotland.

Neils Harbour, a small town where we stopped to pick up fresh snow crab leg clusters for dinner.

Our guide for the day carrying packages of snow crabs to the bus. What a sport she was!

One of the beautiful vistas along the Atlantic side of Cape Breton Higlands National Park.

The Keltic Lodge on Middle Head Ingonish.

Four colorful lawn chairs awaiting occupants...

View of the South Bay Ingonish harbor.

Another view of the rocky coast.

We walked down the hill from the Keltic Lodge to get ice cream at the Atlantic Restaurant.

Pat Corley is really "getting into" her ice cream.

Joe and Susan Barack demonstrate a gracious way to eat ice cream... from a cup.

Our guide treats us to some pipe music on the way back.

Barry is unloading our snow crabs after arriving at the campground.
The day started and ended with overcast skies, but the sun shone most of the day during our drive.
