| Day 14 - Cavendish, Prince Edward Island |

Today we boarded a bus for a tour of Prince Edward Island. |
 |

Our first stop was at Cavendish Dunelands Trail. |

The boardwalk led us over the dunes and to the shoreline with a view of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. |

The sand in PEI contains a great deal of iron which causes the red color. |

Mary and Rae Anne explore the coastline a little closer than most of us. |

Our next stop was at Green Gables, part of Lucy Maud Montgomery's Cavendish National Historic Site. This has become famous around the world as the inspiration for the setting in Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic tale of fiction, Anne of Green Gables. |

The house has been restored to it's original turn of the century condition. |

In real life, this farm was the home of David Jr. and Margaret Macneill, who were cousins of Montgomery's grandfather. Shortly after her death in 1942, Lucy Maud Montgomery was recognized by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada as being a person of national historic significance, and a monument and plaque were erected at Green Gables in 1948. Designated in 2005, Lucy Maud Montgomery's Cavendish National Historic Site includes the Site of Lucy Maud Montgomery's Cavendish Home and Green Gables. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the publication of Anne of Green Gables ! |

Anne of Green Gables was actually wandering the farm when we were there. Amazing!! |

They had the most beautiful vegetable garden with everything carefully planted in rows and wonderfully cared for. |

Of course, what historic site would be complete without the gift shop. Notice the only members of our group waiting outside are the men. |

We stopped at a small bay where we had a photo-op of this lighthouse. |

The rim of this garden is an actual jawbone of a whale that had washed up on shore many years ago. |

This old gentleman was outside explaining the lobster traps. Somehow, Pat Corley smoothed talked him into giving her one to take home. Way to go Pat! |

A close up of the old fisherman. I did get a kick out of the Google hat he was wearing. |

We had to drag Ed Rzepka away from this blue heron. It was love at first sight, on Ed's part, not the heron. |

Shots of some lobster boats on dry dock. |

These rows of buoys support lines with mesh bags that are growing mussels. These are a delicacy and are shipped throughout the word. We saw rows like this in most every small inlet we passed on the island. |

Mussel boats anchored nearby. |

Our next stop was the Dunes Studio Gallery. |

Everything in the Gallery was of high quality and one-of-a-kind on most items. |

I gave up counting all the different levels as we wandered from one room to the other. |

The grounds were every bit as interesting as the Gallery itself. It had ponds, statuary, flowers, etc. |

The lily pads were blooming and their bright flowers were gorgeous with the green pads as a background. |

One of the small ponds that dotted the garden. |

It was now time for lunch and we stopped at the Prince Edward Island Preserve Company. |

We were greeted at the door by Bruce MacNaughton, the owner, who had also come out to the bus to give us a little history of his establishment. |

We were seated and fed within about 10 minutes. |

We had heard they had best ice cream in the area and a number of us took the opportunity to test that rumor. |

We visited Kensington Station as our next stop. |

Not much to see here, but it was beautifully restored and maintained. |

This is St. Mary's Catholic Church. We were told that it has perfect acoustics where you can stand at the back of the church and converse with someone in the front. However, there was a wedding going on so we were not able to enter and test this for ourselves. |

A closer view of the statues that circle the steeple. |

Our last stop of the day was this fresh seafood market. It is right on the water. Many of us enjoyed a seafood dinner this evening. |

The name of a fishing boat parked at the dock caught our attention. |

Our guides name was Irene, and she was a hoot. Very knowledgeable about PEI and a real comedian. |

Although we are not leaving until Tuesday, our next two days have something scheduled each evening so now was a good time to have our travel briefing. |
