Day 54 Dease Lake, BC
Today was a beautiful day. We started out with a cool morning but the sun was shining and quickly warmed up to the mid 60's. About 2 miles from the campground, we turned on the Cassiar Highway toward Dease Lake. However, the road was under construction for much of the route, so driving was pretty slow. Not a problem since we only had to drive 140 miles today.
The scenery was beautiful and the road improved somewhat so we had stretches where we could get up to 90 kilometers per hour, about 55 MPH
Many of us stoped at the Cassiar Mountain Jade store. They mine their own jade. They had two of these large saws outside sawing the jade into pieces. The Princess Jade Mine in the Cassiar Mountain Range, about 80 miles from Jade City, accounts for about 75% of the world's jade supply.
This is Pine Tree Lake not far from Jade City. Simmons lake with a wonderful sand beach and beautiful clear water. The mirror like surface is reflecting the trees along the shoreline.
Dave and Sharon Wilson left early today so they could have time to drive to Grand Canyon of the Stikine. It is about 55 miles from Dease Lake. This is the road down to Telegraph Creek at the bottom of the canyon and as you can see from the sign, it is a very steep grade.
These pictures give us an idea of why it is called the Grand Canyon of the Stikine.
The town of Telegraph Creek at the end of the road has a number of turn of the century homes it in from the gold rush days. Some of them are still in use and some are not.
This is a bridge on the road going into Telegraph Creek. Carmen took time this afternoon to work on one of his Diamond Willow walking sticks.
Tonight we had a gathering around a fire for our driver's meeting. It was fun to have a fire again. However, as evidenced by Loren, Cathy and Madi's head gear, the fire did not drive the mosquitoes away.
Days 55 - 56 in Stewart, B.C.
